| Chester's banner is put up |
As they put up the banner in the Deri, Britt and Dani praise Chester’s talent, with Dani expecting him to go to silicon valley and make millions. Suddenly a voice says, “It would be nice to have a whizzkid in the family!”
![]() |
| "That's Garry's voice!" |
Britt looks round, sees it is Garry,
![]() |

Sioned is looking at some books; “Opening a book club or something?” enquires Ed.
![]() |
| "We're going to read them together" |
She replies that they are going to read them together, as there is no point in paying to see someone when the books can do the same job.
![]() |
| "You might as well start reading¡" |
Then Sioned has a phone call from Sheryl, who has had a cancellation, so Sioned rushes off to the salon, telling Ed, “You might as well start reading!”
![]() |
| But Ed has other ideas |
He looks at one of the books – Overcoming Relationship Problems – then tosses it down.
![]() |
| "He keeps changing the subject" |
Dai arrives at Crymych, where Linda tells him that every time she tries to explain to DJ, he changes the subject.
![]() |
| "He ought to stay here a bit longer" |
Dai informs her that Eifion and Cadno have started dating, and wants her to agree that DJ should stay there a bit longer. “I suppose I shall have to!” she sighs, “He’s out buying ingredients for a ‘super stew’ now –

![]() |
| That thing has now arrived at the salon |
At the salon, Sioned demands what is that strange object on display, and Sheryl tells her,

“A symbol of stability for Hywel and me, apparently – it’s a gift from Gaynor!”
![]() |
| "Best place for that is Megan's shop!" |
Sioned’s considered opinion is that it belongs in the Maenan shop.
![]() |
| "We're going to this posh hotel!" |
Sheryl tells her that she and Hywel are going to celebrate the New Year at a five star hotel with a spa.
Just as Mathew informs Dani in the Deri that he has a good feeling about today, Garry approaches and asks who he is.
![]() |
| "Are you the new rep?" |
“Mathew, the new barman,” answers Mathew, “Are you the new rep?” Dani tries to stifle a laugh.
![]() |
| "I'm Garry Monk, and I own this place!" |
“I’m Garry Monk, and I own this place!” announces Garry, and Mathew says that he has heard that Garry has a really good sense of humour. “If I wanted a comedian, I would have employed one!” stresses Garry.
![]() |
| "Well, you weren't around to employ anyone!" |
Dani points out that he was not around to employ anyone; “Mathew is staying – comprendé? or whatever they say in Greece?” Britt warns Mathew to treat Garry with more respect, as he has been working with refugees for months.
![]() |
| "Don't you think that was a bit harsh?" |
Upstairs, Garry remarks that Dani’s comment was a bit harsh,
![]() |
| He incurs the wrath of Dani |
but she replies, “No – what is harsh is leaving an answerphone message on Christmas Day, and not bothering to ring again!”
![]() |
| "There was hardly any signal" |
He maintains that there was hardly any phone signal. She is dismissive; “I understand that I’m low on your list of priorities – I needed you, but . . .
![]() |
| "Oh, just forget it!" |
“oh, forget it – you weren’t here, were you?”
![]() |
| "You two need to catch up" |

| "She's on day four of her training schedule" |
DJ points out to Dai that she is on day four of her training schedule, to strengthen her mind and body to get better.
![]() |
| "Cancer-busting poppycock!" |
Dai tells him, “Have you thought how you can really help her? She wants someone to clean and vacuum the house so she can rest, not wittering on about cancer-busting poppycock! Talking about stuff like that can drive people crazy – she’s in a fragile condition. She says that you go over the top, and what she wants is peace and quiet.
![]() |
| "So that's the thanks I get!" |
“You’re making it sound as if she doesn’t want me here,” suspects DJ, “So that’s the thanks I get for trying to help!”
![]() |
| A one-sentence resumé on Garry Monk |
At the Deri bar, Ed gives Mathew a quick summary of Garry; “Stealing cars, selling dodgy handbags, handling guns – he’d sell Dani if the price was right!”
![]() |
| "I thought he'd been helping refugees" |
Mathew says he was under the impression he has been helping refugees. As soon as Sioned comes into the pub,

![]() |
| A Polish 10 zloty note |

DJ has packed his bag; “She wants me to go, so I’m leaving,” he tells Dai.

| "I'm not staying where I'm not welcome!" |
Linda comes in and is informed, “I’m not staying where I’m not welcome.

![]() |
| "Cwmderi is where your heart is" |
“This is not about me,” answers Linda, “Staying here, you’re hiding from reality – Cwmderi is your home, where your friends and family are – and where your heart is. If you’re not with Cadno, you’ll find someone else when the time is right. You’ll realise that this is for the best.”
![]() |
| DJ leaves Crymych |
He leaves for home with Dai.
![]() |
| "Anything to avoid me!" |
Ed is preparing to go for a run; “Anything to avoid me!” remarks Sioned, “Once I arrived in the Deri, you went all weird.”
![]() |
| "I thought I'd get a telling-off" |
He explains he thought he would get a telling-off for going to the Deri instead of reading, and he was under the impression that they had agreed she would go to therapy sessions.
![]() |
| "I don't see the point of wasting money" |
“I don’t see the point of wasting good money when books can do the same thing,” she tells him, but he insists the books will not get to the root of the problem,
![]() |
| "But the relationship is not the problem" |
as they suggest that the relationship is the problem.
![]() |
| "Oh – so it's my fault?" |
She protests, “Oh – so it’s my fault? You must really hate me! Why make out that I’m a bad person in need of therapy?
![]() |
| "You make me sound like a monster!" |
“You make me sound like a monster! I had my hair styled earlier – you haven’t even noticed or said it looks nice!”
Then she calms down somewhat and adds, “It’s a fact that you and I make each other unhappy all the time. Where can we go from here, Ed?”
![]() |
| Ed does not know the answer |
Ed does not know.
Garry and Dani come downstairs, as there is a lot to do for the New Year’s Eve party.
![]() |
| "I heard you're on the New Year's honours list" |
Mathew jokes, “I heard you are on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list – where exactly were you?”
![]() |
| Garry answers . . . not very specifically |
Garry replies, rather vaguely, that he was in a small town on one of the Greek Islands. “I wondered, do they use Euros there?” Mathew asks.
![]() |
| "I'm not sure we need you now!" |
“You’re not paid to wonder – just to serve,” Garry snaps at him, “In fact I’m not sure we need you now I’m back!”
![]() |
| Dani is full of praise for Mathew |
Dani maintains that she would not have been able to cope without Mathew, and that the punters like him, as he is sparky and full of energy. “His smile attracts women from Llanarthur!” she alleges; Garry goes to check the accounts to see if they agree with that.
![]() |
| "Where did you get that?" |
Britt produces the grotesque mask which she intends to raffle for Garry’s charity. Dani expresses surprise to hear that Britt was given it at the salon; “I gave it to Siôn and Gwyneth – some people are so ungrateful!”

| Dai is about to put the kettle on |

Dai begins, “There’s no easy way to say this . . .”
![]() |
| "Her and Eifion!" |
“Her and Eifion!” deduces DJ, and hurls the gnome to the floor,
![]() |
| The ignominious end of the garden gnome |
where it shatters into many fragments.
![]() |
| "I shall have to move back with Mam and Jim" |
Sioned concludes, “I shall have to move back with Mam and Jim – that’s the only option.” Ed does not want that, and points out that he has never lived alone – when he was 18 he raised Gemma, then he was with Angela, and now Sioned.
![]() |
| "You're angry with me all the time!" |
“I want to make you happy, but you’re angry with me all the time!” he says.
![]() |
| "Help me find the answer in these books" |

| "It's a gift I got from an old boss" |

![]() |
| "Must have been a big hole!" |
Mathew considers it must have been a big hole.
![]() |
| "You must have missed me after all!" |
“It means a lot to me that you’ve found it – you must have missed me after all!” Garry tells Dani. Meanwhile Mathew suggests that it is probably worth a bit, and pretends to drop it.
![]() |
| "We don't need him any more!" |
“I don’t want fools like him behind the bar – right? This is a family business!” roars Garry, as he takes some notes from the till, “Now I’m back, we don’t need him any more!”
He gives the money to Mathew, who replies, “Wouldn’t you rather pay me Euros – or some other currency?”
![]() |
| "Going to tell them what you were doing in Poland?" |
He is forcibly ejected from the Deri, and once outside, brandishes the Polish note, demanding, “Are you going to tell them what you were doing in Poland?”
![]() |
| "Keep your nose out of my business!" |
Garry snatches back the note and warns, “If you want to live, keep your nose out of my business!”
