| "We've got Little Gem lettuces and parsley" |
Cadno is speaking on the phone to Eileen about what organic veg is needed at the shop when DJ’s phone sounds its text tone.
| Cadno sneaks a look at DJ's phone |
She reads, “See you at Plas Du.”
DJ comes in and she tells him he has just received a text; “Anything important?” she inquires,
| "I've got to go into town" |
but he replies that it is only spam, and that he had to go to town.
| "I've got a Saturday job!" |
Courtney tells Eifion that she has a Saturday job at Zone 4, a women’s clothes shop that he has never heard of. “I’m going to buy a car – just a little secondhand one,” she tells Eifion, but he points out that they do not come cheap.
| "Please come to the garage with me! |
She begs, “Please come with me to the garage – Garry may have something suitable.”
| "What will you do if you see them together?" |
Cadno hurries to see Diane, who asks what she will do if she sees DJ with this Linda;
| "I shall punch him – and her too!" |
Cadno replies, “I shall punch him – and her too!” Although Diane is adamant that DJ loves her, Cadno protests, “He’s going to sleep with another woman this afternoon – and I’m going to catch the swine at it!”
| "This one's £300" |
Garry announces that one of his cars is £300,
| "But it does need £200 of work doing" |
but Gethin points out it needs £200-worth of work. Courtney has only £150 in the bank,
| "It looks so nice – like a Matilda!" |
but says, “It looks so nice – like a Matilda! I could make her look so cool,” which makes Garry smile.
| "He wouldn't cheat on anyone!" |
As she and Cadno are on observation duties at Plas Du hotel, Diane insists, “This is stupid – it’s not in DJ’s character to cheat on anyone!” Cadno sees a blonde approach, suspecting that she is the one, but she passes DJ without looking.
| "Hello, who is this woman?" |
Then an older woman approaches him, and Cadno exclaims, “He wouldn’t have an affair with her!”
| Cadno considers this is the evidence she needs |
However the stranger greets DJ, and they go in together; by this time Cadno is really concerned.
| Courtney looks at the Llanarthur car dealership |
Back home, Courtney looks at cars online, and is disappointed to see the cheapest at Llanarthur is £500;
| "Don't forget tax, insurance, MOT and petrol" |
Eifion reminds her this is before tax, insurance, MOT and petrol.
| "How about a payday lender?" |
She suggests a bank loan, and even mentions the payday lenders that advertise on TV, but Eifion warns her most strongly not to have anything to do with them.
| "The grease monkey will look at it!" |
Garry tells Gaynor to bring in her car, “And the grease monkey will have a look at it!” Gethin takes exception to this,
| "Is that offer still open?" |
and mentions to her that he would like a change of career, asking if the offer of observing at school is still open. He mentions this to Garry, and receives the reply, “Not on my time!” but Gethin is determined to take some leave.
| "You – a teacher?" |
Garry comments, “You – a teacher? You crack me up!”
| "Iwan, you must have time for lunch!" |
Linda asks DJ, “How are you? You look so well.” He is in a hurry to get away, but she insists, “Iwan, you must have time for lunch.
| "I'm Dic Junior now!" |
“It’s DJ now – I changed it!” DJ answers, “Dic Junior – I got more of a welcome from him that I ever did from you! I’m not here for a soppy reunion – I don’t want you in my life!”
| "I had breast cancer" |
Linda explains that she has had breast cancer but now is fully recovered.
At this point, Cadno comes barging in;
| "I though you'd be upstairs by now!" |
“I thought you’d be upstairs by now! Did you get lost on the way to town?” Turning to Linda, she continues, “And you – you’re old enough to be his mother!”
| "Actually, she is my mother!" |
DJ explains that she is indeed his mother, causing Cadno and Diane to look at each other with incredulity. Cadno rebukes DJ for all the secrecy, and he replies, “I didn’t want you to know – you’d only interfere!”
| "Why don't you join us?" |
Linda invites them to stay for tea, and persuades DJ not to walk out. Diane introduces herself as the wife of Dai, Dic’s brother. She is surprised when Linda tells her, “I don’t know anything about Dic, to tell the truth – it was only one night, and a drunken one at that!” She reveals she used to live at Crymych, and moved back there two years ago.
| DJ looks decidedly uncomfortable |
“I can’t believe you’d think he was having an affair with a woman my age!” laughs Linda, “This is the first time we’ve seen each other for years.”
| "Since you kicked me out at fifteen" |
DJ elucidates, “Since you kicked me out at fifteen. You had a choice – your boyfriend or me – and you chose him. How is Ray?” She tells him that they split up long ago, as the illness was too much for him.
| "I told you he was a useless coward!" |
“I told you he was a useless coward!” comments DJ.
| "Perhaps it was all for the best" |
She suggests that what happened may have been for the best, as he is happy now, with a family and a girlfriend.
"One old lady driver"
In the Deri, Garry informs Eifion that the car Courtney was admiring has only 20,000 miles on the clock, and the previous owner was an old woman who hardly left the village.
| "If she can find £400, Matilda is hers!" |
“It’s a good runner – if she can find £400, Matilda is hers!”
Eifion recalls he was driving at 14, and adds, “I expect you were driving getaway cars at twelve!”
| "I thought the time was right" |
Linda points out that an illness like that puts things into perspective, and that she did not want DJ feeling sorry for her; “I thought that the time was right – or at least better – we used to be such mates!”
| "It's too late – I can't forgive you!" |
He is not easily convinced; “I’ve got a new life – I’m happy, and I don’t know how you can be part of it. It’s too late – I can’t forgive you – not everyone turns their back on their only child!”
| Off goes DJ |
He gets up and walks out of the hotel.
| Eifion cannot see Gethin as a teacher |
In the Deri, when told by Garry about Gethin’s aspirations to be a teacher, Eifion shares the amusement of Garry, who comments,
| "He'll come crawling back!" |
“He always sulks and throws his weight about before crawling back – ‘Please Garry, sorry Garry, we’re family’!”
| "Find someone else to do your MOTs!" |
Gethin emphasises that this time is different, so he had better find someone else to do MOTs for a fortnight.
Garry warns him, “Don’t bother coming back – there won’t be a job for you!” He tells Eifion, “I’ve got Geraint,”
| "Er – Geraint's going to Lanzerote tomorrow!" |
but is rather taken aback when Eifion reminds him that Geraint is off to Lanzerote tomorrow.
| "I don't want her back in my life" |
Cadno finds DJ in the hotel car park; he tells her, “I’m happier now than I’ve ever been, and I don’t want anyone to spoil it – I don’t want her back in my life! She kicked me out with a ferry ticket in my pocket.”
| "Give her another chance!" |
Cadno pleads with him to give his mother another chance.
| "He won't change his mind" |
Meanwhile Linda is telling Diane of DJ’s stubborn nature, and that he will never change his mind.
| "I may have been a bit hasty" |
Then he returns, admitting that he has been rather hasty; “Why don’t you come to Penrhewl for lunch?” Cadno adds that she can stay the night, as they have plenty of room.
| "You love that car, don't you?" |
While Courtney is lovingly stroking the car,
| "OK if I start tomorrow?" |
Gethin tells Gaynor that he can start at the school tomorrow.
| "I've been saying goodbye to Matilda" |
Courtney returns home and informs Eifion that she has been saying goodbye to Matilda, “I know it’s silly.” He is rather touched by this and offers to buy it for her.
| "Oh thank you, Eifion!" |
She is ecstatic, flings her arms around him,
| She administers a rather inappropriate kiss |
and kisses him.
He pushes her away, protesting, “What are you doing?”
| "The place would fall to pieces without DJ" |
At Penrhewl, Cadno insists that the place would fall to pieces without DJ, then goes to collect Arthur, leaving them to talk. “I have to go and dig some potatoes,” says DJ,
| "Want to see the garden?" |
“Do you want to see the garden?”
| "I'm going to stay with a friend" |
Eifion has decided to go and stay with a friend;
| "I'm sorry! I don't know what came over me!" |
Courtney pleads with him not to go. “I’m sorry! I don’t know what came over me! I’m really excited about Matilda! I’m as shocked as you are!”
| "I want you to go and live with Eileen and Jim" |
“I want you to go and live with Eileen and Jim,” Eifion instructs her, “You kissed me – it isn’t right! We can’t live under the same roof any more. I don’t want you here tomorrow!’
| "Oh, I've really messed up this time!" |
Courtney is distraught.
