As Diane attempts to wake DJ, Dai warns her he is nothing but trouble when he is awake, and leaves for APD.

When DJ regains consciousness, he asks, “What am I doing here?”

In the farmyard, Cadno is on the phone to someone; “I’m nothing to do with the boxing – I’m just providing the venue,” she tells them.

| Eileen needs some hydration |
Eileen arrives, after running from the village, and enquires about DJ, having heard about the business with Dai, as he had told Jim.

| "We're waiting for the DNA results" |
Cadno explains they are waiting for the DNA results.
“They’ve got a long journey ahead,” sympathises Eileen, “I know that better than anyone!” and she accepts a lift back to the village with Cadno.

| Ffion is ready to leave for school |
As they are preparing to leave for school,

| "I don't feel well!" |
Daniel, who appears to be staying at Cysgod y Glyn, complains that he feels unwell. “You’ll be all right,” Gethin assures him, “It will be good to see Mam again, and you can come to stay any time you like.”

| "Hello Gaynor, I've got a bug" |
Ffion and Daniel leave, but Gethin phones Gaynor and lies that he is suffering from a bug, and will not be at school today.

| "How are you managing without Gethin?" |
In the Deri, Eifion asks Garry how he is managing in the garage without Gethin;

| "It's hard when you lose a good mechanic" |
“Well, it’s always hard when you lose a good mechanic,” is the reply, which amuses Eifion.
“Good? It’s not like you to praise anyone,” he comments, “He hates the school, you know – he told me himself, and even said he misses the garage!” Garry insists that he is not missing Gethin.

| "Did you know Cadno was sterilised?" |
DJ tells Diane that Cadno was sterilised a few years ago, which comes as a surprise to her. “Is that why you argued?” she enquires,

| "Perhaps a reversal is possible" |
“Perhaps a reversal is possible – Glenys’s daughter had one after remarrying. You’d make a fantastic father!” DJ is doubtful, bearing in mind his past.

| "How would you feel if Dai were your father?" |
“How would you feel if Dai were your father?” she asks. DJ replies that the very thought makes him feel sick,

| "I've been worried about him" |
then Cadno arrives, very worried about DJ, and Diane leaves them alone to talk.

| "I should have told you earlier" |
“I’m so sorry – I should have told you earlier,” apologises Cadno.
He admits that he would like children,

| "You can always have a reversal" |
“But it doesn’t matter – Diane says you can always have a reversal – it’s not the end of the world, is it?” Cadno looks shocked by his words.

| "Don't tell Ffion!" |
Eifion sees Gethin in the street; he is told, “I couldn’t face school today – but don’t tell anyone, especially Ffion!” Eifion informs that if it is any comfort, Garry is lost without him. He will not admit it, but lost two customers yesterday, and has described Gethin as ‘a good mechanic’.

“He’d welcome you back with open arms – if you can swallow your pride,” Eifion advises.

| The test result has arrived |
In the post, Diane finds a letter from Trimester House Clinic, addressed to Dai;

| Dai is not looking forward to finding out |
he glowers at her.
Cadno explains, “I went through nine months of hell, carrying Arthur!” DJ protests that she was with Eifion then, and now things would be different, as he would treat her better.

| "I want to spend my life with you" |
He insists he wants to spend the rest of his life with her, but Cadno is adamant, “Sorry, I’m not going to change my mind.”

| "I can't do it!" |
Dai stares at the envelope before putting it down and telling Diane that he cannot do it.

| "Pity you didn't say that to Linda!" |
“It’s a pity you didn’t say that to Linda, before jumping into bed with her!” snarls Diane.
“You have no idea what it was like between me and my first wife – you just enjoy twisting the knife!” he replies.
“I suppose Alys didn’t understand you!” says Diane, unsympathetically.

| Dai begins to tell what happened |
“As it happens, she didn’t understand herself,” answers Dai, “Our baby had just died. It was just before Christmas 1986, six weeks before the trip to Paris – the room was ready for her, there were drawers full of clothes and the crib was ready, but poor little Martha was stillborn. Our lives were in tatters, and we didn’t know where to turn.

“Alys turned against me, wouldn’t talk to me or touch me – she couldn’t even look at me! I never felt so lonely in my life – the rugby trip was the last thing I wanted, but Dic insisted it would do me good.

“I remember leaving the boys straight after the game and going back to the hotel – I must have been looking for comfort.

“I’ve never told anyone the whole truth. Next morning I felt just the same – worse if anything. The baby was meant to bring us closer together – it was a hopeless situation.”

Diane now realises why Christmas is a difficult time for him, and insists he should have told her. He stresses, “I’ve changed – I’d never be unfaithful to you, you’re everything to me!”
Outside Penrhewl, DJ asks, “Where do you see us in, say, five years from now?”

Cadno replies that she simply wants to be happy at Penrhewl with him,

but he angrily adds, “And to hell with what I want?”
“I was afraid you’d leave if you knew the truth – I’m selfish and only think of myself, as you said,” Cadno admits.

“I’d be selfish if I asked you to have the operation – the last thing I want is to hurt you!” concedes DJ, “You’re the most important thing in my life. I can live without having children, but not without you! I’ll always have Bobi and Arthur – I know Eifion is their father,

“but there’s always room for me, isn’t there?”

| "I can't do this to you!" |
Cadno dissolves into tears; “I can’t do this to you – the boys will never fill the void. One day you’ll look at me and hate me – realise that you made a mistake – and I don’t want that to happen.

“It would be best for everyone, especially you, if we split up. You’ve got years to fall in love with someone else, who can give you what you want –

| She hurries back to the farmhouse |
“you’ll thank me one day!”
Diane asks Dai, “You want it to be positive, don’t you? I saw how you were with him yesterday.”

| "How can I forgive myself?" |
Dai agrees, but wonders how he can forgive himself, as DJ will not forgive him.

| "I might lose him altogether!" |
“If he’s my son, I’ve missed out on so much, all because of one lie, years and years ago. If it’s negative, I might lose him altogether, as nephew, as son – maybe we’re not even related! I know I’ve got a funny way of showing it, but I adore that boy!” He picks up the envelope and begins opening it.

In the garage, Garry has just lost another customer, despite offering a 20% discount.

Gethin comes in and suggests, “Perhaps I could help – for a pay rise and a bit of respect.”
Garry responds that the little children of Wales need him;

Gethin states, “I’m not a teacher and never will be – I can’t stand the noise children make, and the things teachers chat about sends me to sleep.”

| Ffion and Daniel have arrived |
Unseen by him, Ffion and Daniel have just entered, as he continues, “I hate the place, and really want my job back – what do you say?

Daniel demands, “Why aren’t you at school, Dad?”
After looking at the letter, Dai passes it to Diane;

she concludes, “I’d better ring Linda.”

| Dai is very emotional |
Dai has tears in her eyes.
Ffion tells Gethin, “Daniel had a feeling you’d be here,” and Daniel asks why Gethin told lies about it.

| "You're a brill father!" |
Gethin maintains he wanted to show Daniel he was more than a dirty mechanic, but he answers, “You’re a brill father, and I want to be a mechanic when I leave school!”

| "Exactly when are you going to start?" |
Garry irritably demands, “Exactly when are you going to start, Geth?”

| Eileen consoles Cadno |
Cadno arrives at the shop flat in tears, and is given a hug by Eileen.

Dai and Diane return home and are informed by DJ, “Cadno and I have split up – I’ve lost everything now!” Diane breaks the news that the test results show that Dai is his father.

Dai acknowledges that he said some terrible things, and that they have a long way to go.

| "Go to hell! You'll never be my father!" |
“What – until we play happy families?” demands DJ, “Go to hell! You’ll never be my father! It takes more than a scrap of paper to be a father!

“I hate you! You’ve ruined my future with Cadno and you’ve ruined my past –
