| "It's Bobi's fourth birthday" |
In the garage, Eifion tells Garry that it is Bobi’s fourth birthday;
![]() |
| "Make the most of it" |
Garry advises him to make the most of it, as they are not children for long.
![]() |
| "Can you have Gwern tonight?" |
Gwyneth comes in to ask Garry, “I’m so busy, preparing for the move. Can you have Gwern tonight?”
Garry is sure that they can organise something, telling Gwyneth to bring him over about six.
![]() |
| "Do you want to come out with me tonight?" |
Matthew visits Courtney, asking if she would like to come out with him tonight;
![]() |
| Courtney is overjoyed . . . |
she nervously agrees,
![]() |
| . . . and Elliw is also excited |
much to the amusement of Elliw, who is hiding at the foot of the stairs. When he has gone, Courtney remembers she is supposed to be having dinner with her dad and Eileen,
![]() |
| They look quite triumphant |
but Elliw is sure they can think of a suitable excuse.
![]() |
| Cadno is going off the Eisteddfod |
Cadno appears to be having second thoughts about the Eisteddfod; “We won’t be able to get on with farm work, and imagine the mess!”
![]() |
| Sioned and Ed arrive for the party |
Sioned and Ed arrive early for Bobi’s party, having looked at some houses for rent nearby, and being unimpressed.
![]() |
| "It would help if Angela gave the money back!" |
“It would help if Angela gave the money back!” complains Sioned, “Then we could put down a deposit on a house. It’s getting too much at Mam’s now.”
![]() |
| "My friend is looking for tenants" |
Eifion reveals that a friend is looking for tenants; “A cottage on the back road to Llanarthur – I’ll get his number.” He writes it on the back of one of Mark’s leaflets; when Ed sees it, he is immediately concerned.
![]() |
| Ed reads the leaflet |
He reads, “Did you see something suspicious on Maes y Deri estate?
I'm looking for any information about the person or people who broke into my house, 39, Maes y Deri, Cwmderi, some time at the end of February or early March.
It would be very grateful for any information you have.
Please contact Mark on 07700 900160
Thank you.”

| "I'm afraid we have to finish an essay tonight" |
Courtney and Elliw go to see Eileen, telling her that they have an essay to finish this evening, and that they can work and cook some food at the same time.
After they leave, Jim considers that Courtney’s behaviour was odd, but Eileen regards it as that of a typical teenager.
![]() |
| Dai is most animated about the Eisteddfod |
Dai rushes in, warning that Cadno has changed her mind about the Eisteddfod. “Consider the benefits it would bring to Cwmderi – and APD!” he insists. Jim replies that as they are about to go to Bobi’s party, he will have a word with her, but Dai resolves to come as well.
![]() |
| "I can't bring him here!" |
Courtney agonises, “I can’t bring him here – Eifion will be coming back! We could go to your place – you could stay upstairs, and your Dad is playing darts. There isn’t anywhere else – please Elliw, I’m begging you!”
![]() |
| "Just don't do what I did!" |
Elliw reminds Courtney not to do what she did – have a baby.
![]() |
| "I want to go home" |
Ed sits morosely at the party, wanting to go home; “Don’t worry – no-one saw me!” Sioned assures him. Dai walks in, and Cadno can guess why he is there. He has brought a present for Bobi from the shop, where there is a distinct lack of suitable presents.
![]() |
| "Soap – he'll be thrilled!" |
“Soap – he’ll be thrilled!” comments Cadno.
![]() |
| Yes, Dai is after something |
He also hands her a bottle and extols the advantages of having the Eisteddfod held locally. Gwyneth saves Cadno by calling her over,
![]() |
| Bobi and Gwern |
where Gwern is enjoying himself playing with Bobi. Cadno suggests he could stay overnight, as the boys would love that.
![]() |
| "Garry is going to have him" |
Gwyneth replies that she has already arranged that Garry will have him, but is persuaded by Cadno that Garry will not mind, so she phones him.
![]() |
| Garry makes his feeling quite clear |
He, however, makes it very plain that he is not interested in any change of plans.
![]() |
| "Do you think Courtney's been acting oddly?" |
Jim tells Eifion that he is worried about Courtney, but attributes it to school work.
![]() |
| Courtney experiences pre-date nerves |
Elliw tries to calm Courtney when she panics, “He’s not coming! What if we don’t have anything to talk about?” Elliw points out that if he was not interested, he would not want to meet her.
![]() |
| They wrestle with the remote . . . |
When Mathew arrives, Courtney has turned on the TV; he sits beside her, as Elliw makes herself scarce. He says that he likes highbrow programmes, and tries to grab the remote;
![]() |
| . . . and end up kissing . . . |
as they tussle, Courtney kisses him,
![]() |
| . . . then there is a repeat performance |
and finding it a pleasant experience, does it again.
![]() |
| It does not look as if Gwern will be staying |
At Penrhewl, just as Gwern is about to go up to bed, Garry appears and berates Gwyneth; “You can’t change your mind just like that! Dani has changed her plans, so he’s coming with me!” As the rest of the guest make a hurried departure,
![]() |
| "Say goodnight to Mam" |
he tells Gwern, “Say goodnight to Mam.”
![]() |
| Dai consumes large quantities of food |
Dai has had dinner with Jim and Eileen instead of Courtney, and has efficiently polished off all the food.
![]() |
| "Next time, buy yourself some chips!" |
Jim rather pointedly tells him, “Next time you’re on your own because Diane is out with the girls, buy yourself some chips!”
![]() |
| "Take this Tiramisu for the girls" |
Eileen produces a container of Tiramisu and tells Jim to take it over to the girls, hard at work on their essay.
![]() |
| Courtney's note to Eifion |
Eifion arrives home and sees the note from Courtney;
![]() |
| "They're working at Elliw's" |
Jim walks in with the Tiramisu, and Eifion informs him they are at Elliw’s,
![]() |
| "Right – I'm going round there now!" |
so of course Jim will not be deterred from taking the food there.
![]() |
| A break while Elliw warms some milk |
Elliw has just disturbed the lovebirds, as she warms some milk for baby Gethin, as he will not settle.
![]() |
| "What? Coming round now?" |
Courtney has a phone call from Eifion, warning her that her father is on the way.
![]() |
| "He can't see you – he'll go mad!" |
“He can’t see you – he’ll go mad!” says Courtney, “Please, Mathew – you don’t know him – he’s embarrassingly over the top!”
![]() |
| "Oh, he's at the door!" |
By this time it is too late, as Jim has arrived;
![]() |
| Elliw and Mathew take up position |
Elliw grabs Mathew and they sit together on the sofa. “I thought you were working – who’s this?” demands Jim.
![]() |
| "He's Elliw's boyfriend" |
Courtney introduces him as Elliw’s boyfriend, who is also doing this essay. Jim comments, “I may as well take you home – it looks to me as if Elliw is busy!”
![]() |
| She tries hard not to laugh |
Elliw does her best to suppress her mirth. Courtney leaves, and Mathew winks at her.
![]() |
| "Having second thoughts about leaving?" |
Cadno asks if Gwyneth is having second thoughts about leaving. “Between you and me, sometimes I think I should forget it,” she replies,
![]() |
| "Do you think I'm being selfish?" |
“It’s a great opportunity for all three of us, but do you think I’m being selfish taking Gwern to a strange place?”
![]() |
| "Being without the boys was unbearable!" |
Cadno recalls that when she left the boys with Eifion, she thought it was for the best, but it was unbearable. “You have to put your foot down with Garry – it’s the only way,” she advises.
![]() |
| "Thanks for the warning" |
Back home, Courtney thanks Eifion for the warning, and he asks, “Who is the lucky man? I deserve to know for saving your skin!” He is surprised to hear it is Mathew;
![]() |
| "You're busy with your exams" |
“He’s a nice bloke, but it’s a busy time with your exams and everything.”
![]() |
| She wins him over with some Tiramisu |
Courtney scolds him for sounding exactly like her father, but is glad she does not have to keep secrets from him.
![]() |
| Encouraging news for Courtney |
Then she receives a text, “That was fun! Are you free Friday night?” She smiles broadly.
![]() |
| "Hello – is anybody home?" |
At the Deri bar, Ed is deep in thought; “Hello – is anybody home?” enquires Sioned,
![]() |
| "They would have told the police" |
“If anyone saw me that night, they would have told the police.”
![]() |
| "Not the police, but they might tell Mark" |
Ed is concerned that the people on that estate are not on good terms with the police, but might tell Mark.
![]() |
| Garry is angry with Gwyneth |
When Gwyneth comes into the Deri, Garry tells her, “He’s fast asleep, if you’re thinking of picking him up! I’m fed up with you saying one thing and doing another.
![]() |
| "We're doing things my way from now on" |
“We’re doing things my way from now on – he shouldn’t leave Cwmderi!”
Gwyneth protests that he cannot force her to leave Gwern here;
![]() |
| "Remember trying to take him abroad?" |
his response is, “Do you remember snatching him and trying to take him abroad? And when you killed Brandon?”
![]() |
| "I've been punished for that!" |
She stresses that she has been punished for that, but Garry is no less menacing;
![]() |
| "You'll go to prison – not Newport!" |
“Any more antics and I’ll make sure you go back to prison – not to Newport!”
