| A postcard from Cardiff |
Eifion, in his uniform, looks at the post; he has a postcard from Cardiff, (addressed to 21 Heol Llanarthur) sent by Angela and Courtney.
![]() |
| They have escaped from being bored to death |
Meanwhile, they have just escaped from a course, recommended by Eileen; Courtney describes it as boring, while Angela remarks, “He made Siôn White sound like the world’s most interesting person!”
![]() |
| "Will they notice we've gone?" |
Courtney wonders, “Will they notice we’ve gone?”
Angela replies, “I don’t care – we won’t see them again! Anyway, we’re doing what they said – living in the moment! We’ll get better therapy with this!” and she produces a credit card.
![]() |
| "That's Eifion's card!" |
Courtney exclaims that it is Eifion’s card, but her mother says, “Eifion told me to treat myself, and if you play your cards right, I might treat you too!”
![]() |
| Sioned prepares for her appointment . . . |
Sioned applies makeup; “I can’t go with these bags under my eyes,” she tells Eileen, as she has not been sleeping.
![]() |
| . . . but Ed is quite disinterested |
Ed shuffles in and gets himself two slices of bread. “Hurry up – we have to be there by two!” Sioned exhorts him, but he shows no interest.
![]() |
| "I'm going without you!" |
“I’m going without you!” she shouts, “I’d rather go on my own than with someone who doesn’t care!”
![]() |
| "She needs all the support she can get" |
Eileen tells Ed, “She is all worked up about these tests, and needs all the support she can get!”
![]() |
| "Eileen, mind your own business!" |
He snarls at her to mind her own business, which rather unsettles Eileen.
![]() |
| Marian is having a nap |
DJ comes into Penrhewl to find Marian asleep; Cadno reports that there is a sheep in the pen which is sick. He is yawning, and tells her,
![]() |
| "It wasn't lambing which kept me up all night!" |
“It wasn’t lambing which was keeping me up all night – not that I’m complaining!”
![]() |
| They kiss . . . |
As he kisses Cadno, Marian wakes, and comments,
![]() |
| . . . as Marian makes her comment |
“Bob and I didn’t sleep together until our wedding night. It’s about time you and Eifion thought about getting married.” Smiling at DJ, she adds, “You’ve always looked after me, Eifion,”
![]() |
| "Marian, I'm DJ!" |
but when he points out that he is DJ,
![]() |
| This confuses her |
Marian looks confused.
![]() |
| Britt complains about Dani again |
Gwyneth goes to the shop for a pint of semi-skimmed milk, and Britt comes in, complaining as usual. “That girl is getting too big for her pink patent shoes! There’s a list here – as long as her hair – of things to get for the Deri!”
![]() |
| "It would be cheaper from the Cash and Carry" |
Eileen takes a look, and says that she has them, but it would be cheaper at the Cash and Carry. “She expects me to go shopping in my condition, without a car. She goes on and on – I’m sick of hearing her complaining!”
Turning to Gwyneth, she says, “Thank goodness I’ve got you!”
![]() |
| Someone does not look happy |
and Gwyneth does not look too pleased.
![]() |
| "She really thought you were Eifion" |
As DJ looks for his book on lambing, Cadno wonders what they will do with Marian; “She really thought you were Eifion.” DJ reports that she told him the same story three times yesterday.
![]() |
| "She wants us to get married – whoever you are!" |
Cadno laughs, “She wants us to get married – whoever you are!”
“What’s wrong with that?” DJ ponders, “You might want to, one day.”
![]() |
| "I hope you don't do that in front of the kids!" |
They kiss again, and this time, Eifion walks in.
“I hope you don’t do that in front of the kids!” he reprimands them.
![]() |
| "I came over specially to see Arthur" |
He is not happy that Arthur is having a nap, as he came specially to see him.
![]() |
| "Well, come and help me with the lambing!" |
DJ suggests that he could help with the lambing; “They’re arriving like planes at Heathrow!” but Eifion is not keen.
![]() |
| Anything to keep Ed's mind off his problems . . . |
As part of his fitness routine, today Ed is doing ‘sit-ups’,
![]() |
| . . . and Sioend's call goes unheeded |
and his mobile, showing that Sioned is calling him, rings unanswered; then the home phone rings, with the same result.
![]() |
| "Today has been a laugh!" |
Angela and Courtney are in the Lookout Café at Cardiff Bay, next door to the Dr Who Experience; “Today has been a laugh, just like the old days!” says Courtney, and Angela predicts that Eifion will have a shock at the end of the month.
![]() |
| "We won't be able to do this much longer" |
“We won’t be able to do this much longer,” Courtney regrets, but her mother simply remarks that they have to stay positive. Courtney enthuses, “There are amazing treatments in America,”
![]() |
| "It cannot be treated" |
but Angela simply wishes it were that simple; she maintains that her aneurysm is too deep to be treated, and she just has to accept that.
![]() |
| "Don't you want to stick around?" |
Courtney cannot understand this attitude; “You’re not the mother I know! Nothing would stop her – don’t you want to stick around? I don’t feel I know you at the moment – don’t give up, I need you! I don’t want to lose you, Mam!”
![]() |
| She hurries outside |
She gets up and goes outside, with the Pierhead Building in the background.
Following her, Angela agrees, “I’ll go to America!”
![]() |
| This pretence keeps getting more difficult |
Courtney is overjoyed, and hugs her mother, who is wondering how she will extract herself from all this.
![]() |
| "Thanks for spending a fortune at Eileen's shop!" |
Britt reports to Dani that she has taken everything on the list to the flat – plus the bill. “Thanks for spending a fortune at Eileen’s shop, instead of going to the Cash and Carry!” Dani replies, “I want you to work tonight!”
![]() |
| Dani is issuing orders |
When Britt tells her that she is having the night off, Dani will not hear of it; “Garry’s going to the brewery and I have to check stock ready for the opening, not to mention the painting!”
“You can pitch in and be part of the new family business or not – I don’t mind!” emphasises Dani, so Britt agrees to be there as soon as she can.
![]() |
| "I make that 86 lambs" |
As Cadno tots up that they have had 86 lambs born so far, DJ’s mind is on other things;
![]() |
| "Would it be such a bad thing to marry me?" |
“Would it be such a bad idea to marry me? You acted as if it was the silliest thing you’d heard. Your reaction worried me.”
![]() |
| "I'm not a meringues and confetti girl" |
Her reply is, “I’m not a meringues and confetti girl. I can’t believe we’re discussing this! If you’re asking me to marry you, the answer’s no!”
![]() |
| "I just want to know if there is any chance" |
DJ simply wants to know if there is any chance it might happen if things worked out. “Eifion and I were together for years and never married – and look at the mess that would have caused!” DJ points out that he is not Eifion.
“It’s just not for me – I never want to get married!” insists Cadno, so DJ wonders where that leaves the two of them. If the relationship is not going to develop, there is not much point in their being together.
![]() |
| Eileen anticipates the worst . . . |
Eileen discovers Sioned sobbing in the armchair, and assures her, “We’ll get a second opinion – we’ll go private – anything!”
![]() |
| . . . but Sioned has good news |
Sioned tells her mother, “It’s not threatening – I’m going to be all right! I’ve got a condition called Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, but it won’t affect me. I wanted to tell Ed first, but he won’t answer his phone. Why doesn’t he care?”
![]() |
| "Ed turned pretty nasty!" |
Eileen replies, “He’s changed,” and Sioned says he is only interested in his stupid dumbbells. “I tried to talk to him earlier,” continues Eileen, “But he turned pretty nasty – I was a bit scared of him!”
Ed comes into the room;
![]() |
| Again, Ed seems disinterested |
Sioned tells him the results of the tests, and that it will not affect her health, but his only comment is a diffident, “Good, it’s worth finding out.”
![]() |
| "Is that all you've got to say?" |
“Is that all you’ve got to say? Aren’t you glad I’m going to be all right?” she demands,
![]() |
| "You're back on steroids, aren't you?" |
“I know what’s going on – you can’t hide it from me any more! You’re back on steroids, aren’t you?”
![]() |
| Ed says not a word |
He remains silent, so she tells him, “I’ve had enough – I’m leaving!” but his response is the same.
![]() |
| "Dani's put me in an impossible position!" |
Britt descends upon Gwyneth with the children; “Dani’s put me in an impossible position – she’s been trying to push me out of the Deri!”
![]() |
| "And you want me to babysit?" |
“And you want me to babysit?” deduces Gwyneth, at which point Catrin asks if they can have fajitas.
![]() |
| Catrin fancies fajitas |
“Food as well?” demands Gwyneth, as Britt thanks her and leaves.
![]() |
| Eifion has a call from Courtney |
Eifion is still at Penrhewl when he has a phone call from Courtney; “And she’s agreed? Don’t get your hopes up – it’s still a serious condition. We’ll try our best – give her a big cwtch from me!”
![]() |
| "Oh, I didn't see you there!" |
Marian hears all this from her chair in the corner, and Eifion bluffs that Courtney was telling him how they are enjoying their time in Cardiff.
![]() |
| "I didn't come down in the last shower!" |
“I didn’t come down in the last shower!” protests Marian,
![]() |
| Eifion tells her everything |
so he tells her what is really going on. However, he warns her that Angela is very secretive, and does not want people feeling sorry for her, so it must be kept quiet.
DJ and Cadno come in, and Eifion warns DJ, “She’s a real commitment-phobe!”
![]() |
| They do appear to have done a bit of shopping |
Near to the Norwegian Church, Angela brings a bag of something edible to Courtney,
![]() |
| "I hope America is ready for us!" |
who remarks, “I hope America is ready for us!
![]() |
| "I'd like to propose to you – one day" |
DJ reveals that he would like to propose to Cadno one day, but she does not want to argue about it any more. “If we don’t both want the same thing, there’s not much future for us,” he suggests.
![]() |
| "I would rather climb trees" |
Cadno recalls that when she was a little girl and the others were talking about wedding dresses, she was not interested and would rather be climbing trees. “Then I met Eifion – I thought we could get married, but he never asked. It went from bad to worse, so I’m glad he didn’t.”
![]() |
| "Don't close the door on the future because of him" |
DJ points out, “Eifion put you through hell, but don’t close the door on the future because of him. I’ll go and check on the sheep.” She agrees that he is right,
![]() |
| "Maybe, in the distant future . . ." |
and concedes that maybe, in the distant future,
![]() |
| There is still hope, DJ |
she might think about marriage.
![]() |
| "I need a break from him" |
Sioned tells her mother that she feels worthless, as she puts on her leather jacket; “I need a break from him!” When Ed comes in, she tells him, “I’ve got a friend waiting for me in Cardiff.” He asks which friend, but she answers, “Mind your own business!” She advises that if he turns dangerous, Eileen should throw him out.
![]() |
| Sioned issues an ultimatum . . . |
Ed is issued with an ultimatum; “You’ve got a week to sort yourself out – otherwise, it’s over!”
![]() |
| . . . but, predictably, there is no response |
He impassionately watches her go, and Eileen is definitely worried.
