| Britt has been making cakes |
In Garry’s flat, preparations are under way for Gwern’s birthday party; Dani moans that there is flour all over the place. “I’ve been cooking – that’s why!” replies Britt, and Garry samples one of her cakes.

| "We've chosen you to run the kitchen!" |
Garry tells her, “You’re a good cook, Britt – that’s why we’ve chosen you to run the kitchen at the Deri!”

| "Have you now?" |
“Have you now?” she snarls,

| "I'm not going to be stuck in the kitchen!" |
“Listen, I’m not going to be stuck in the kitchen while you’re by the bar, talking to everyone!”
Dani remarks that Britt is a better cook than her, and Chester has to get his comment in;
“That doesn’t say much!” Britt accuses Dani of wrapping Garry round her little finger.

| "Why not give it a try?" |
Garry tries to explain that they did not want to pressure her, and suggests that she gives the arrangement a try, to see how it goes. Britt stomps off with a box of cakes to Gwyneth’s, growling, “I don’t want to make myself ill again!”

Courtney comes back to Eileen’s, saying that she has a lot of homework to do, and that her books are at home.

| "Ed didn't get them" |
She asked Ed to collect them last night, but they have not arrived. Eileen suggests that she goes to get them, but Courtney refuses.

| "Ask your mother to bring them over" |
Eileen maintain that it would be good if they saw each other again, so Courtney texts her mother, asking for the books.
Gwern is now seven years old; Britt says she is glad of any excuse to get out of that flat.

| Britt complains about Dani . . . |
“Lady Muck wants to put herself ‘front of house’ in the Deri and push me into the kitchen!” she tells Gwyneth, “There’s no way I’m going to be her skivvy! It would be ‘Britt, table six needs another bowl of chips – oh no, table nine – I’m reading it upside-down’!”

Gwyneth agrees that it is a shame Britt is not behind the bar.

| "Sorry about the other night!" |
Siôn, carrying a large box, meets Gaynor and apologises for his non-appearance the other night.

She seems very keen for his company, and suggests dinner tonight at 7:30pm.

| Chester appears in good humour . . . |
Chester is on the phone, laughing and joking with a mate, but when Dani asks him to go and get a card and wrapping paper, he replies,

| . . . but says he is depressed |
“I don’t want to go out and see anyone – I’m depressed!” Dani comments that he did not seem depressed when he was on the phone, but he insists, “I’m worried about Mam – what if she takes a turn for the worse? I don’t want to be her carer! Mam needs help around the house.”

| "All you do is sit on your backside all day!" |
“Help?” exclaims Dani, “All you do is sit on your backside all day – you’re not depressed, you’re just lazy! Using her as an excuse – and she’s the same – pretending you’re worse than you are!

“There are plenty of people who are really ill!”

| "Where's Courtney, then?" |
Angela brings round the requested items, and enquires where Courtney is. Eileen assures her that this problem is only temporary,

but Courtney comes in and is quite clear, “I’m not coming home! I’m sixteen – I can move out whenever I like!”

| "Right, let's have your key, then!" |
Her mother tells her in that case she can collect the rest of her stuff; “And I want your key, then – I’m not joking! You’re not getting it back – maybe I don’t want you at home!” Courtney gives her the key,

and looks distressed as Angela stalks off.

| Birthday boy Gwern blows out the candles |
As, amidst cheers, Gwern blows out his seven candles, Britt’s face falls; she has seen Siôn come in with the present for Gwern.

As he eagerly opens it,

Britt snidely remarks, “I hope it’s not a book of Bible stories, like last year! I could only understand half of it myself!”

Dani mutters, just loud enough to be heard, “That says more about you than the book!” Gwyneth says that he has wanted a car like that for years, and Siôn points out the button on the bottom to stop the noise.
“It’s a pity everyone hasn’t got one!” Britt snarls, as the guests adjourn for food.

Eileen reprimands Angela for talking like that to Courtney; “You were nasty, and she has enough on her plate as it is!”

Angela sinks into a chair, sobbing, “I can’t do this any more! I can’t live like this! You don’t understand – I can’t live with what I’ve done!

“Mam, I’ve done something unforgivable!”

| "I shall have to do something about this!" |
Eileen tells her to stop it, as it is not helping anyone, stressing that all she and Courtney need is a bit of time to think. “If you don’t sort it out between yourselves, I shall have to do something about it,” she says.

| "He took that car to bed with him!" |
At Gwyneth’s, Siôn is told that Gwern took the car to bed with him, and that she was not going to let Britt spoil the party. “You obviously still know how to handle her,” says Siôn,

but he cannot stay for a drink, as he is due at Gaynor’s for dinner.

| Eileen suggests a retreat . . . |
Eileen has been researching a retreat online, and puts the idea to Courtney; “A ‘Mindfulness Course’ – a chance for you and your mother to escape from everything and talk.”

Courtney is sceptical, predicting that two days of meditation and lentils will not make everything better between them.

“You should make the most of the time you have with your mother, while you have the chance,” advises Eileen, “You’re pushing her away because you’re scared of losing her. If she gets worse, she’ll need you more than ever!”

Courtney admits, “If she wasn’t there, it would be like losing my best friend,” and Eileen explains that is why Angela kept the truth from her – not wanting her to get hurt.

“I don’t know what I’d do without her,” Courtney confesses. Eileen suggests they ask Angela to come over.

| Gaynor begins her blatant flirting |
When Siôn arrives at Llwyncelyn, Gaynor jokes, “I didn’t bother with the red carpet, in case you didn’t turn up!” As they sit down for their meal, she says, “It’s difficult at first when a marriage breaks up – but it will get easier. I never thought you and Britt were suited to each other.” Siôn concedes that they are quite different.

“You’re not of the same nature, somehow,” she continues, “You’re so intelligent and learned, not saying that Britt isn’t, but you need the company of someone equally cultured – someone who understands you.”

Dani is watching a film, and tell Garry to go to bed, as his snoring is disturbing her.

Chester moans, “This is the worst chick flick ever – it’s crap! How long is it? – I’m bored,” and makes snoring noises, calculated to irritate Dani.

“You’re acting like a child!” she snaps, but then checks herself, “I know things are hard for you – Garry told me about your chat the other day.”

This angers Chester; “That’s none of your business! I don’t want to talk about it! I want to sleep – it’s my home too! You’re horrible to Mam, and you do my head in! Stop pretending to care about me – you only care about yourself!”

| Gwyneth has made a highly potent cocktail |
Britt goes back to Gwyneth’s, where she is invited to have a Caipirinha cocktail, (potent Brazilian recipé) which Britt has not had for ages.

“We’ll have to serve them in the Deri when it reopens,” she says, “Dani’s holding everything up – she even wants fairy lights in the toilets!

| "This takes me back to the party in Amsterdam!" |
“This cocktail takes me straight back to that party in Amsterdam! Things have changed so much since then – but you still put too much lime in it!”

| "And you drink them too fast!" |
Gwyneth in turn protests that Britt still drinks them too quickly

| Eileen puts forward her proposal |
Eileen introduces her idea to Angela and Courtney as a present; “One that neither of us want,” interrupts Courtney.

Angela insists that they both want things to be better between them, and looks forward to being pampered. She is brought down to earth by Eileen, who tells her it is not luxurious, but a chance to relax and escape everyday life.

| "You might as well cancel it then!" |
Courtney replies, “You might as well cancel it then – Mam’s not interested unless there a massage and facial!”
“I have to look after myself now,” Angela stresses, “I don’t want to freeze in a yurt in the middle of nowhere! But I’d go to the ends of the earth to make things right between us.” They both agree that Eileen should book it.

At the end of their meal, Gaynor and Siôn look at each other – is it in an amorous way? – but are interrupted by the arrival of Dani,

Siôn tells her that it is Britt’s problem now.

“Britt has no idea!” rages Dani, “Garry and Britt both think the sun shines out of his behind! If I try and talk to him, all I get is abuse! I’m desperate! Doesn’t the school have a truancy policy?”
Gaynor will see what she can do in the morning, and Dani leaves.

Siôn also says it is time he went, and when Gaynor suggests, “Shall we do this again some time?” seems quite eager to agree.
